Learning Bites – Difficult Conversations
Interpersonal difficulties in the workplace seems to be a fact of life. We’ve all seen situations where different people with different goals and needs have come into conflict. If not dealt with, often-intense personal animosity can be the result. It is estimated that more than 65 percent of performance problems result from strained relationships between employees, not from deficits in individual employees’ skill or motivation.
Course Objectives
The objectives of this bite are to help participants:
- Achieve results with difficult people in various different situations.
- Understand and adopt assertive behaviour to ensure effective and positive communication in all relationships.
- Learn how to stay assertive in different situations and look for the win-win solution.
We will explore conflict, what it is and how it affects relationships. We examine assertiveness and those behaviours that are less effective, i.e. passiveness, aggressiveness and manipulation. Difference is often at the heart of difficulties, and good communication is essential in its resolution, especially when we wish to deliver constructive criticism; so we’ll provide a structure that will help frame and deliver a difficult feedback message. Finally, we’ll take a look at the importance of understanding and recognising emotions, and choosing the most appropriate response.
